JUDAS GOES ELECTRIC
JUDAS GOES ELECTRIC
By 1965, Bob Dylan’s musical pivot into a more rock sound was well in full swing. Both his albums and live performances were split between acoustic and electric, with the latter often met with hostility and disdain. The same fans of the 60s folk movement who once hailed him as the voice of their generation now saw him as a traitor to “the cause.” This amalgamated in the now-infamous exchange between Dylan and a heckler in 1966 at Manchester’s Free Trade Hall. “Judas,” exclaimed one fan from beyond the dimly-lit venue, as the band begins playing Like A Rolling Stone. Bob Dylan, without missing a beat, responds by rallying his bandmates to “play it fucking loud.” The rest as some would say, was pure rock ’n’ roll history.
