At the time of this film's release (2003), the real-life killer behind a series of killings in the South Korean city of Hwaseong in the 80s was still out there, scott-free. In one of the most defiant, poignant and meta final scenes in cinema history, Park Doo-man, the detective protagonist of the film stares into the camera, breaking the fourth wall and straight at the killer, as if warning him that his crimes had not gone unnoticed.
